You will note that certain addresses aren t valid or used All zeros means this network All ones is the broadcast address Class A addresses were reserved for the largest organizations The format of the address has 8 bits reserved to define the network and 24 bits to define the host Originally, a host was a computer that was smart enough to run IP and TCP Today, every networkconnected device contains a computer, and therefore, it has its own IP address In fact, many devices have multiple IP addresses because they use different addresses for network management functions than the one they use for data transfer Therefore, it is very easy to run out of IP addresses A Class A address provides for 127 networks with over 16 million attached devices A Class B address provides for 16,000 networks and 65,000 attached devices A Class C address provides for about 2 million networks and 255 attached hosts on each small network Now that we understand the format of addresses, let s see how we can use them The first point is that routers only route on the network address The router doesn t care about the host address The assumption here is that the job of the router is to find the destination network and that all the hosts behind that network address are all accessible thereafter Imagine that the router is the interface to an Ethernet network where all the hosts are connected While this is conceivable for a Class C address with 255 hosts, it is mind boggling when one considers a Class A address As Figure 29-10 roughly depicts, there are examples of the three classes of networks connected to the router If a device on the 1451500 Class B network wants to send to a device on the 14000 network, all it does is send it to the router that forwards it to the class A network The router considers the job done when it finds the 14000 network Now, clearly, it is silly not to mention that it is unworkable to have 17 million devices on one Ethernet.

Recall that one of the benefits of KPIs over measures is that they can contain a trend So far when dealing with KPIs, no trend has been apparent When dealing with scorecards, there is a category in the Details pane called Aggregations, and this is useful for not just trends, but also for adding sums, averages, and so forth to the scorecard Figure 5-21 shows a simple scorecard with a single KPI, Sales This uses the same Sales Amount used in other examples, and the target has been set to Sales Amount Quota Three years of data are shown and in each case, sales have exceeded the target However, if there is a desire to also see a total for the sales for all three years, this can be achieved by dragging the Sum from the Aggregations node and dropping it on the scorecard Notice this is simply a sum of the values shown and could just have easily been the average, maximum, or minimum

Most VPN products are designed strictly around IP They will often handle other protocols, such as Appletalk and IPX, by tunneling them inside of IP packets This introduces both overhead and delay If the amount of foreign protocol traffic is small, then this is not significant If the bulk of your network is IPX or Apple talk, we recommend you investigate VPN vendors who will support these protocols in native mode

Getting the torque from the shaft to the wheel requires a high-strength hub connection You should consider using the largest shaft diameter that you can locate and design into your robot Not only will the larger shaft diameter withstand damage from hazards and weapons much better than a smaller shaft, you will find it easier to machine a slot, a D flat, pin holes, or key slots in the larger shaft (see Figure 3-13) With the larger shaft diameter, you will require larger pillow block bearings that will withstand much greater forces So, larger is better in these cases for greater strength

The justification for doing VoIP on a VPN is primarily security, along with the reduced cost of VoIP Depending on usage, voice generates relatively large amounts of traffic Be sure to include this additional traffic in your sizing estimates Our discussion of VoIP applies to whether we have a VPN or not (see 30 ) With a VPN, the delays due to encryption are larger, and therefore we would expect that the performance of voice over the VPN would be worse than voice over IP If we have chosen a network provider who will offer a SLA with QoS, there is a better chance for success, but the delays due to encryption and basic packet switching will still be there With the exception of international calling, one must have a very large calling volume to make it worthwhile to put voice over the Internet and suffer the attendant quality reduction
